6 Steps to Building in Montana: Horse Barn Edition

Updated: Oct 29, 2022

Ever wanted to know what it takes to build in Montana? Follow these steps to realize your “VISION” of perfection in today's Tuesday Tips.

1. VISUALIZE your project. What look are you going for? Lean heavily on some type of visual representation or vision board so you can accurately portray the style and concept you have for your build. This makes it easier to communicate to your contractors, family, friends, etc. who are helping your dreams come to life. If possible, employ an architect so everyone is really on the same page.

2. INSPIRATION. Make sure you spend lots of time thinking about all the details, even down to the color of your outlet covers! You think I’m kidding? I’m definitely not. Once you start the build process it’s not impossible - but can be trying fo

r all involved – to make changes. Think of all the small, miniscule details in advance. In the long run, it will make a huge difference.

3. STRESS. It’s ok, just breathe through it. We all get overwhelmed when it comes to making impactful decisions. Just remember this is a huge milestone in your life. ENJOY IT! How often are you going to do this in life?

4. INSIGHT. Utilize your resources, my friends! Find people – like me – who have built in the area and take the time to ask alllllllll the questions. That’s what I’m here for! There’s something to be said for experience. In addition, make sure you talk with contractors, builders, and trades people. Use their knowledge, insight, and resources to make sure you’re building exactly what you want with no regrets.

5. ONWARD AND UPWARD. Hang on to your pants! Building in Ravalli County, Montana doesn’t take long at all. Our first home was built in 6 months, almost to the day. Our second build was less than 4 months. Incredible, right? It’s gonna be a wild ride but well worth it. Permits, you say? If you’re outside city limits, you only need a septic and electrical permit. Make sure you hire qualified, vetted contractors and subcontractors to help with your project. Save yourself the headache in advance.

6. NAILED IT! Bask in the glory of your success and hard work! Thank all those involved in taking your project from your mind’s eye to a physical representation of perfection. Take a moment to appreciate your hard work, and the beauty that you helped create.

Now to provide details about this particular build for us… Our family has always dreamed of having a timber framed horse barn. This beefcake will be a showstopper, to be sure. I look forward to showing you the final product in a few weeks so stay tuned!
