Celebrating The Bounty of forest product permits

Did you know about these permits?

Bitterroot Valley National Forest

The Forest Service allows for personal use permits for all kinds of things here in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Some of which, you may not even heard of!

Some of the more interesting include:

  1. Christmas Tree Permits - $5

  2. Firewood Permits - $5/cord

  3. Upper Burnt Fork Decorative Stone Community Collecting Area & Railroad Creek Community Rock Source - you can head here to collect rocks for landscaping, rock fences, and even your fireplace. Material from this area is hard quartzite and its appearance is angular medium dark gray rock with moss. The size of the rock varies from 6" to 4'. There is a minimum 1 ton with a maximum of 10 tons per individual per year. There is no charge for the permit.

  4. Plant Permits - the seedlings or shrubs must be less than 2' in height and limited to 10 per permit.

  5. Post and Pole Permits - only live lodgepole pine trees less than 6 inches in diameter at 4 1/2 feet from the ground level may be cut.

  6. Other interesting products include berry picking, mushroom cultivating, ornamental boughs, cones, and green florals.
