What to do after you drill your well

Have you filed your groundwater right with DNRC?

After you drill your well and the water is put to beneficial use, you'll need to file a notice of completion of groundwater development (form 602) with the Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation.

On this form, you can indicate what the use is for (such as domestic purposes, lawn and garden, irrigation, and livestock). It's important to file this right as soon as the water has been put to use because it establishes the priority date for your water right(s) in the future.

To see if you already have recorded water rights associated with your property, use the DNRC water right query system to look up your property by name, or by utilizing your property's GEOCODE (found using Montana Cadastral).
